Like the title says.

1) BF 1942. This game was just an instant classic. This was such a groundbreaking game and my first true FPS game that I got into online. The level of skill that one could develop in ANY and every class and vehicle. You had your amazing Engies like Doc, OneWay, and Bugeater. Guys that could mow down a village with a med kit and thompson..Our Duces, Grimms, Johnny Rebs, Repos, and Bodybags (and many others that came and went, that were simply amazing).

Pilots..what an art form. Watching a great pilot was just so damn impressive in this game smile.gif. Anti-tankers and AA artists...Jimmy 2toes could shoot down anything. Karkahn was a rough map for some pilots.

Matches. Just epic (and I really hate using that word). I remember some of the most heart pounding, intense, and close matches in this game. Virus, RoM, HOT, WD, TFS..the list goes on..some great allies were made.

2v2 tank. This was my and OneWays thing..we had a great time, and again, just intense matches.

Top two maps. This was tough..I really enjoyed every map. Each brought its own highlights out of the game. Really, had something for everyone.

1) I had to tie..Tobruk and Aberdeen. IF you were a tanker, you loved these maps. Tanking..just like the flyboys, took an artist. A technician.

2) Gazala - I would have liked to put Market Garden or Bocage here, but this map had a little of everythings, minus the sea stuff..but Pacific maps had their places...god, I hate only picking two from this game.

**honorable mentions for the mod's for this game. DC was well done and those choppers really took something to fly. And I really liked the official add-ons. with Secret Weapons being just a very fun time..jet packs!! ultimate bunny hopping!!

*** Gah...Battle of the Bulge!! man, I loved that map

**** ah, and for those that were around, this was a game that my wife really got into. It was great and where I first met the 222. We both spent countless hours playing (before kids), and she even played a match or two.

BF2 - When we needed a full time, in all-its-glory replacement for 1942, we were finally delivered this game. Granted, it seemed like an awkward transition from WWII era 1942, to mordern day combat. But I fell in love with this game very soon. Especially in the early days before a lot of the dilution, known as patches ( this can be said for a lot of games, I suppose). They really seemed to start catering to the joe-noob public. But still, this game has kept a lot of us enteratined, still to this day (again, just waiting for that next ONE).

1) Sharrqi - I love this map. If you can get it leveled out in a good back and forth, it really is fun. Getting in and over running that TV station was just a blast and took precise timing, when that was our opening strat. Taking the contruction site was another great battle. In pub servers, I LOVED going in with my knife, and just stabbing people, level to level.

2) Dalian Plant - This was one that had something for everyone, and was pretty much very even. although, the J-10 would oftern rule the skies, when properly handled. Good chopper fights and armor destroying assists...some great flag battle points as well.

**honorable mention for modding on this one. However, it took a long time, if not TOO long, for them to finally open the code up to the mod community. Mods like PoE2, DCon, even PR, were great stuff..but just not in time..

BF2142 - I know a lot of the Deuce's didn't make this transition, or did keep with it. However, after the first patch, or two, I really began enjoying this game. THe levelling up actually appealed to me, and man, I love the knife as it it, but now I get your dog tags? count me in!! Some of the weapons and vehicles were a lot of fun. I really liked this as a glorified mod, and I think it should have been treated as such, much earlier. I think some competition with this game, would have been loads of fun. Once they were able to eliminate (mostly) the lag, when playing titan, that was a fun game mode. You had your objective to detroy the core of the enemy ship. It was just like something out of star wars, or something..but with out being covulted wtih trying to stay true to a storyline or character..

I wish I could name the maps, but I cant. Some of the titan ones were a good time, and there were some infantry ones that were great.

Um..BF: Vietnam. Ok. This was an arcadey shoot em up noob fest. Things like the M60 just fucking dominated. You could full on sprint into a village and mow down 12 enemies, in a blaze of John Rambo carnage. The concept was cool, and the game was a little more balanced, after a series of patches. I remember the choppers were pretty easy to fly and some of them just laid waste to anything on the ground. I think it was one of the russian choppers (the Hind?) that had like 50 missles..and you just fucked people up..it was great, if you were the one on top smile.gif

This was the first attempted successor to '42. However, it just didnt stick. I think one of the reasons is this war does not "seem" to translate well to a video game..perhaps it just has not been dont RIGHT yet.

again, drawing a blank for map names.

Anyone else?

For me it was BF1942, there's really no second for me honestly. I liked BF2 allright but due to shit going on in my life at the time I wasn't ever able to pick it up and get into it like I did with BF1942....and BF:Vietnam was fun for a little while but was too unbalanced at first (anyone remember the M60 - LAW/Noob Tube combo?) and then I lost interest in it before they had a chance to patch it.

The thing that got me with BF1942 is at the time I got it I was really heavily into WWII stuff and had just begun getting into PCs. I bought a PC gamer magazine and kept seeing these ads for BF1942 saying you could "Fly anything, drive anything, shoot anything" and my curiosity was piqued. Once I got a capable PC the very first game I got (right after some battlebots type shitty game) was BF1942 and then a few months later the RtR expansion pack.
BF1942 was my first online FPS, and even up until now was the game I was the most serious about. I learned every nook and cranny of every map, learned how to use every weapon in the game, learned to use every vehicle in the game aside from the planes which I was just never any good at compared to a decent pilot. I was usually most happy as an engy in my M10 but was probably better when playing medic (who wasn't) and anti-tank....man I loved sneaking up behind a tank and ass shotting it or zooking planes out of the sky. I loved the tanks in that game, the trajectory of their shells, the way the armor on every tank had different weak and strong points.....it seemed like much more of a challenge to kill a tank in BF1942 than it ever was in BF2 for me I guess because there was no guided rocket so you had to know the trajectory of your bazooka rounds. I eventually got pretty decent at plain old infantry combat after several training sessions with Duce which I am eternally grateful for.....I went from being slightly above average in 1v1 combat to being pretty damned good because of the pointers he gave me that I had never thought of. It really woke the game back up for me when I began getting frustrated with it at one point.

Map-wise, God I never realized how tough it would be to pick two maps from that game to call my favorites..... Tobruk had to be one of them for the tank battles and the need for good AT players. Stalingrad was probably tied for my second favorite despite all the grenade spamming. Don't know why but even though the infantry combat left much to be desired I always seemed to do pretty well on that map. The map Stal tied with would have to be Op. Market Garden. It had a bit of everything except the ships. It was always a great time and a good mix of everything. I could put 3 or 4 more maps in there that I liked just as much as any of the others though. I liked Kursk a lot too, lots of infantry combat as well as planes and tanks galore. Kursk and El Al was where I honed my 'skill' at alt whoring. I never was a big fan of the Pacific maps after they added the garand to the pacific maps in the game.....I just didn't like it and seldom ever played those after the garand was put in unless I was playing hard core infantry.

Honorable mention for me would have to be Ghetto Berlin. Had many a late night playing Ghetto with a lot of you guys, especially Topless before he turned into a wowfag LOL

For BF2, I just never got to know any of the maps well enough to be very good at any of them, but my favorite maps to play were probably Kubra Dam because of it's multi-leveled approach to gameplay especially near the dam, then Sharqi, along with Karkand mainly beacuse I played so much of it compared to the rest.

Bf42 was the first of any game to have it all. Hard to beat it, Vietnam killed 42(though it was dieng at the time). Bf2 was/is a very fast game compared to 42. No abilty to hide, so you must move. Once you get into 2 its hard to go back, 42 felt very slow afterward. The one thing for me that makes bf2 very fun even still is the Squad, with out it, it would very boring.

so bf42 was and will be 1# to me it was first to have the triad of land, sea , air. hard to pick a best map. Being a tanker as long as there is a tank its all good to me.

Bf2 a close 2nd, fast action, Squads.

all the rest of Ea,s clones of any of these games was at best just a repackaged crap salad to get your $.

Lets hope a BF3 is good and keeps the best of what works, and PLEASE ea stop helping the noobs Ie. removing the c4 toss and other bs to keep the noobs happy.

Missed this thread, nice one, here is my 42 heartthrob story...

1942 first and foremost, the best game I have ever played. I played the demo when it came out and bought it the first day the full release arrived. Went to Best Buy and a clerk had to goto the back and get it for me because they hadn't put it out yet.

That was junior year of highschool after I was a devoted original Counter Strike player with a bunch of high school pals since freshman year(2000). Well I played a lot less of that game after this. 42 was amazing, even hearing the music as I was loading in got me so amped for the epic battles that where about to happen. I immediately fell in love with the engie kit, chucking expacks like crazy, perfecting the no4/k98, getting headshots from accross the map was so satisfying!

I joined one of the first squads I found on a BF site, 412FFR, mostly European at the time, they started up a North American roster, but still played with people from all over, it was so much more personal in terms of community building than CS was, the sheer amount of teamwork that had to be done to get results was what brought us all together.

Once we had a solid squad together (including the best tanker I've ever seen DOC) we joined TWL CTF ladder, took us a while to go up the ladder but we had one of the craziest matches ever for first rung against one the most popular BF teams at the time, Northern Brigade. We beat them on wake by one flag I think, it was a stand off for literally a few hours of off and on defending and attacking from each side. When the winning flag landed our TS went nuts and we took the top spot which we held onto for a while.

BF2 is second place, but I will always miss my single fire bolt action non-scoped rifles!

Top maps where Battle of the Bulge, Wake, and Aberdeen, I could get a top score on that map as engie infantry.

I am a lot like Doc in this topic.

I loved 1942, but now it seems so slow. I still can't imagine +3 hour matches, but I know we did them all the time. I loved the tanks and the skill it took to run them. The skill shots, the sneaking, and the total domination you could have are still great in my mind.

I loved battle of the bulge and berlin quite a bit, but toburk, guadal canal, kursk, and stalingrad are right up there. My least favorite are MidWay and Omaha Beach.

I like bf2 with the fast pace matches and squads are great. I think squads added so much to the game,, i just wish they left hopping alone, as well as so many other little things. I still think jets should be able to go higher and AA more deadly.. more of a balance as in 1942. Make pilots more skillful where they can still dominate, but it takes skill and not just a joystick.

Overall i think catering to noobs and hackers are what ruined bf2.. it is still playable and enjoyable at times, but it had so much more potential.

I still love any map with a bomber smile.gif though operation harvest is really fun smile.gif

So far on BF BC2.. it is not that bad of a game, it is fun and playable.

It has some elements from lessons learned from BF2. It is nice in a way to see EA learn from prevoius game instead of just reinventing the wheel. While some of the features are not so pleasing to us rusty fuck you in the ass type clan players,,, i can see the reasoning from a pubbing side of things.
    no going prone
    no private servers
    no jets
    no commander
    protected mainbases (death bubble)
these equate to:
    no dolphin diving
no easy access to server code
    no air rapage
    no commander hacks
    no camping main
The no prone thing is perfectly acceptable to me. In a close range battle you would never lay down, but rather move and shoot. More like 1942 fights and I like this. The no server code while frustrating to have to pay for a ranked server... is totally understandable from EA's stand point and is to be expected after the raping the code from bf2 took not too mention server spoofing for stat padding and fake Pb bans. I am sad not to see Jets, but this is Bad Company and not BF3.. I will have to get my infantry on until BF3 drops smile.gif No camping the main is annoying, but you can still shoot into the main and camp as far forward as allowable.. we have done this and it is possible to completely make the other team screwed.

We have found that pointing the enemy on an indiviual level is one of the MOST important features in this game. I feel that the successful teams will master this one thing of the game.... and it can be abused(or used to max potential)... which i try to do at every possible moment... you can for instance spam the consturction building in the begining with "enemy spotted" and high light like 8 enemies smile.gif just like a chopper gunner randomly spamming enemy spotted to find the enemy chopper by random.

--When you "high light" and enemy they get a red triagle above their head on the hud that your whole team can see! They also appear on the minimap... so this is in effect a commander skill, but converted down to an individual player. I feel this is one of the features that once mastered will give a team an advantage just like Squad hopping or Spawn blocking.

The vehicles are not the best atm, but are more like bf2 vehicles where they are best used to protect avenues of approach and protect infantry advances. there are several locations where they can truely dominate, but skilled players and make EXTREMELY quick work of any armor smile.gif They have seemed to but limits on some of the rate of fire on certain vehicles to make them less of a threat, but we will see how they balance them out later on.

The unlock system seems to be a lot like BF 2142,, though I did not get into that game as I am in BFBC2.. my only bitch is the amount of resources this beast requires to run it. If they can stream line it.. it would be a lot better.
